The treatment of people with disabilities in ancient times varied significantly depending on the culture and society. Generally, however, individuals with disabilities were treated poorly and, in many cases, were killed, abandoned, or shunned.

In ancient Greece, for example, the belief that the body and soul were one entity meant that any physical disability was considered a sign of a blemished soul. For this reason, infanticide was often practiced, with disabled infants killed for both eugenic and economic reasons. In ancient Rome, disabled infants were also often killed or abandoned, but those who survived were sometimes kept as court jesters or enslaved for the amusement of wealthy Romans (Marini, 2020).
