Humans live in a world that is complex in nature. The complexity is characterized by urban development, forms of governance, and social stratification among other aspects. Such a complex society constitutes civilization. It is unimaginable that there was a time when civilization did not exist. Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt are the first known civilizations in the world.
Agriculture led to Mesopotamia and Egypt civilizations. The Mesopotamia civilization took place about 10,000 BC. It is the earliest known complex civilization. The development of Mesopotamia was accelerated by the fertile agricultural land between the Tigris and Euphrates (Rochberg, 2014). Here, people discovered agriculture and began domesticating animals. Ancient Egypt civilization occurred in 3100 BC and 2686 BC. It was due to the ability to take advantage of the Nile River for agricultural purposes. The controlled irrigation and the fertile soil allowed the production of surplus crops, which then could support a dense population (Allen, 1997).
