I learned about citizenship in Ancient Greece through studying various philosophers such as Cicero, Aristotle, and Plato. The Romans developed a concrete philosophy of legal rights by liberating law from the shackles of religion and ethics. As a result, this viewpoint became the solid foundation for a complex system of rights. This study examines Cicero's definition of citizenship and how it varies from that of other thinkers.
According to several ancient philosophers, Cicero's notion of citizenship is impractical. A citizen, according to him, should have a connection to the community and be able to find their individuality and purpose within it (Cicero, 1883). To be considered a good citizen, he must be able to form strong bonds with the community. He should prioritize the state in all of his everyday activities. Every move he makes should be in the best interests of the state.
