Before the rock and roll era, Americans were listening to soft music like that of Luis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra’s. It was before the Supreme Court outlawed apartheid or racial segregation.
Rock and roll is one of the most groundbreaking innovations of American history. This was one way of challenging societal segregation especially when America was still an apartheid country. During that time, people with different racial and economic backgrounds were not allowed to interact with each other. Everything was controlled by the government, except what goes up in the air, like music. It was one thing that the government didn’t figure out how to control that part. White people could listen to black music and vice versa. Everyone could somehow connect with each other through music.
It was in the 1950’s when rock and roll music was in the height of its influence. Teenagers were the first to embrace this kind of music. Of course, this was not without the disapproval of their parents. It was through this that the change, of how the African Americans were perceived, started to happen. This was both a conscious and subconscious process. The music was highly influenced or somehow inspired by the plight of African Americans, although the writers and performers were not necessarily of the same descent. There was something about the vulgar, sexual, and rebellious nature of the music that kept people wanting for more.
This time, America was starting to be financially stable and so there was not much need for teenagers to work to add income for the family. In most cases, they were now financially supported by their parents. As a result, teenagers had time and money to spend on leisure, and so they had contributed much on the rise of rock and roll music.
The advent of civil rights and social equality did not automatically give a smooth way for African American artists. Yes, people started to get captivated by music inspired and related to them, but in the national level black artists still faced a lot of backlash and discrimination.
