Amphetamines inhibit the reuptake and promote the release of dopamine and norepinephrine neurotransmitters within the brain, increasing focus, attention, and impulse control (Martin & Le, 2022). That is why it can be good to deal with people who have ADHD and other related conditions. The advantages of amphetamine medications are that they work quickly and are quite powerful in improving attention and suppressing hyperactivity (Martin & Le, 2022). The disadvantages of stimulant drugs are that they have more potential for abuse and dependence. The more common side effects of the stimulants include insomnia, appetite suppression, heart palpitations, and anxiety.
By contrast, the non-stimulants have lower abuse potential and generally fewer sleep-eating side effects and consistent symptom control, which is advantageous for maintaining long-term management; however, these might require several weeks for their complete effect to be noticed and also are not as effective in certain patients. The risk of potential amphetamine side effects, including findings of increased blood pressure, insomnia, decreased appetite, and misuse, should be carefully monitored, particularly in long-term treatment (Martin & Le, 2022). Legal considerations about prescribing amphetamines include observing the regulations concerning controlled substances due to their potential for abuse. In contrast, ethical considerations raise the principle of informed consent and education for the patient on risks of dependence and misuse.
