A previously an active 10-year-old boy hardly played with toys and developed a social withdrawal character. On close observation, he developed a sudden irritability character accompanied by uncontrolled crying, shouting following no known triggers, and was more isolated than before. Despite all the observational symptoms, he had no psychotropic or traumatic medical history in his previous daily life. Consequently, he often administered and risperidone medication as well as visiting his private counsellor occasionally.
DSM-5 Children’s MDD Diagnostic Justification
Major depression disorders being uncommon and new to the DSM-5 manuscript, normally occurs alongside other psychiatric disorders. For this case, the DSM-5 manuscript proposes an in-depth analysis and information gathered from immediate care takers to narrow down the diagnosis confirming MDD (Copeland, Shanahan, Egger, Angold, & Costello, 2014). Therefore, the boy's unexplained screaming, crying frequently, irritability with no known trigger, social withdrawal, and consistent somatic complaints, justifies his diagnostic symptoms of major depression disorder (MDD).
