Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) refers to a mental intervention measures used to treat several mental conditions to improve emotional wellbeing. It teaches people to determine their dysfunctional thoughts, feelings, and conditions that brings negative thinking (Landa, Y. et al.,2016).
CBT in groups applies to people who suffers addiction in a self-help group. Under groups, individuals can express themselves freely by sharing their troubles, struggles and challenges with others hence relating to each other thus creating universality. Group sessions are done often in a week and treatment goes for about four months (Halperin, S. et al.,2000) In family-based CBT, clients already have a working relationship as they already know each other. Counselors aims at teaching children and parents what their specific roles are to minimize conflicts. CBT in family setup have assisted families to function and relate better. CBT in groups is cost effective and provides opportunity of treatment to society (Storch, E. A. et al., 2007).
Counselors encounters challenges when applying these methods. Major problems are anxiety, fear and boundaries. Participants in either setting may choose not to abide by set boundary rules. Other participants may not cooperate with treatment due to fear and anxiety of being revealed or judged by others (Mansell, W. 2008).
