The characteristics include communication skills, patience, and being compassionate. Communication skills is a key quality in nursing. Nursing career involves taking care of patients and communication is required to understand their problems and needs. When dealing with a patient communication is the first thing as it helps one know their patients and create a rapport. Unless a nurse has good communication skills they may miss on some important cues and end up mishandling a patient and in a worst case scenario mis-diagnosing them. Good communication skills include active listening, oral and written communication and non-verbal communication. Effective communication allows a nurse to easily bond with patients which make them free to open. Good Patient-Nurse bond enables patient to share more on the possible underlying issues to a disease which could otherwise remain concealed. It promotes understanding of the patient needs and prompts action by the nurses.
