Extraneous variables are variables that influence the outcome of the experiment though they are not the variable of interest to a researcher. A dependent variable is what is measured and affected during an experiment. Extraneous variable add errors to the results and can therefore cause confusion while interpreting the results. Researchers have attempted to control this variable in order to have meaningful results.
Extraneous variables can be factors that are either intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic factors belong to the subject for example age, gender, diagnosis(McLeod). External factors come from the research being done. To control external factors, researchers make situations out of each subject. Here, the concept of constancy is applied. Everything is done the same way. All communication, the procedures for collecting data should be the same.
