Hospital violence against healthcare providers, particularly nurses is a significant challenge that is posing a threat to the medical world. This problem is currently finding root in the health care systems in all countries. Violence against the medical staff exposes these practitioners to brutal behaviors and can be caused by patients, their families or even other senior staff members. The reasons behind violent actions may be accredited to the physical proximity of the nurses to those they attend to for instance patients.
Nurses are the most valuable and readily available caretakers for patients during the day and night shifts, and forms the immediate or frontline practitioners who deal with patients and their families in the hospital. The most common forms of violence among nurses include verbal abuse as well as physical abuse. The prevalence of workplace violence against medical practitioners is reported to be rapid.
The antecedents and causative factors to workplace violence are mainly affected by gender, age, educational levels, working hours and the type of therapeutic communications. As a result of this, the nurses job performance and care is affected (Albashtawy, 2013). On the other hand, a case of absenteeism, are likely to take lace thus hampering the nurse’s professional lives, increasing stress and mistrust among the workers and increases the chances of burnout. A decrease in the general care levels may also be experienced as a result of dissatisfied workers frustrated by violence.
Method of obtaining the necessary approval and securing support for the Project
In order to successfully implement this project, this paper will pursue external information that is available based on experiences with the implementation of the stated guidelines. A solution focused approach will be developed, and this will not be effective to prevent violence in emergency rooms due to the varying structures created by organizations. The employees, mainly nurses, were also involved in the results of this project rely on their experiences and feedback.
It was also important to get their views on approaches to mitigating this menace in the health sector. However, a suitable organizational strategy will be developed and implemented by incorporating employers and employees and also involving important stakeholders such as unions and health and safety representatives and experts (Albashtawy, 2013). This will be the main determinant factor in achieving success in the implementation of the project.
Problem Description
Violence against health care workers is a concern and challenge that is cropping in the health sector. Workers, especially nurses attending to patients in the emergency rooms are prone to assaults in their line of duty. These incidences have lowered productivity in the medical sector with nurses becoming disillusioned with their profession. Nurses remain reserved and find it difficult to lodge complaints in situations where they remain victimized, a factor that makes them accept violence as part of the job (Albashtawy, 2013). In the instance where victimized nurses complain against insults, chances are they may likely lose their job.
In analyzing this problem, Albashtawy suggests that in today’s context, violence in the workplace is ranked as the most dangerous and multifaceted job-related threats facing nurses in their working environment. The rigidities arise, in most cases, from a culture in health care that is indifferent to the opinion that healthcare providers face patient-related violence risks in addition to the argument that violence is part of their job. Their exposure to violence and violent people raises danger coupled with inadequate protective statutes and restriction of violence programs .The factors listed, in addition to organizational certainties like inadequate staffing and increased patient acuity increase the extraordinary obstacles eradication of violence in the nurse’s places of work (Albashtawy, M. 2013).
Workplace violence, therefore, is considered a health problem that is experienced in all healthcare organizations. Violence in the healthcare centers threatens the safety of patients, health workers and visitors. Chen, Ku &Yang, (2013) says that despite professionalism of how patient services are offered, violence in emergency rooms is still a factor that cannot be avoided.
When asked to patiently wait for some time in the waiting lounges, a stressed visitor may turn violent and resort to physical or verbal abuse. I am reminded of an event that took place on a work station where patients turned out for HIV/AIDS tests. One of the visitors was dissatisfied with his results and physically abused the medical staffs that were performing the tests. These scenarios are endless and are attested in the healthcare department.
The healthcare community is aware of this violence and their numerous approaches to stopping the vice have failed since violence recurs and is most prevalent in emergency departments. Approximately half of the nurses who were involved in the formulation of this project attested to the fact that violence is basically a part of their everyday job. In getting results for this project almost, three quarters of the Emergency.
Department personnel reported that several nurses are dissatisfied with the safety measures created by different organizations in the workplace (Chen, & Yang, 2013). Some of the nurses also express a negative feeling towards handling violent patients in the emergency department and resorted to either changing their field of practice or finding other occupations. It was also revealed that in many incidences, there was a reduced rate of job satisfaction due to violence and impairment in job performance (Cheng, & Yang, 2013).
