Briefly trace and discuss the flow of blood in the human kidney.
Blood enters the kidney through the renal arteries that originate from the lateral surface of the abdominal aorta (Marieb & Smith, 2016). The renal arteries provide blood to the five segmental arteries, and blood passes through several arterioles (interlobar, arcuate, interlobular, and afferent). Before entering the glomerulus then leaves it through the efferent arterioles and enters the capillaries. Blood is carried into nephrons (microscopic artioles) through arcuate arteries. Additionally, the efferent arteriole portions form the capillaries. Blood returns to circulation through veins similar in name and location to arteries.
