Understanding What Shapes Child Well-Being in Rich Countries
Children's well-being involves improving the lives of young people for the better. That is why the multi-level model of child well-being shows factors that affect children's growth and development.
Answer 1
The multi-level framework of child well-being has seven primary levels. They include outcomes, activities, relationships, networks, resources, policies, and contexts. The model shows factors that significantly influence child development. In particular, there exist numerous things that affect young people when growing. The outcomes level has three primary indicators, which are skills, mental well-being, and physical health. Mental well-being includes things, such as suicide and life satisfaction. When it comes to skills, it involves the ability of a child to make friends, read, or perform mathematical calculations. Physical health includes obesity, mortality, and overweight. The indicators in the activity level are learning, socializing, and playing. Children's growth and development are significantly affected by how well they can socialize with others, learn new things, and play with other children. The ability of children to form relationships is essential, which is determined by the school, family, and friends (The United Nations Children's Fund, 2020). Moreover, networks are formed in the community, school, and work. In particular, children make friends with others at school or in the community. These relationships are the ones that enable these young people to grow healthy. Resources have several indicators that include neighborhood, work, and community. For example, children form their first friendships in the community or neighborhood where they are born and raised. If the community is supportive, young people develop good quality. Policies are formed at school, health, and household. For instance, there are rules that children must follow at school. When the government makes health to be affordable, they promote the well-being of children. The last level in the model is context, which includes indicators, such as the society, environment, and economy. If the economy is good, people can get jobs without problems, and many children are sent to school, promoting education acquisition.
Answer 2
Some of the indicators where Canada is doing well are reduced suicide rate for children aged between 15 and 19 years, minimum child mortality rate for your people from 5-14 years, high life satisfaction at the age of 15 years, children make friends easily at school, and there exist high proficiency in reading and mathematics at the age of 15 years (The United Nations Children’s Fund, 2020). Additionally, in Canada, children get support from their parents, and the percentage of individuals using safe drinking water is high. In other words, Canadian children enjoy numerous privileges that young people in other countries might not have. The most significant thing is that the community and parents support children’s needs. That is why many young people in Canada lead healthy lives, and they join schools, which enable them to learn, create, and maintain relationships. On the contrary, some of the indicators where Canada is not doing well include the reduced time for parental leave in early childhood, parents struggle to meet family responsibilities, parents have no time to socialize with their children due to tight working schedules, and a reduced percentage of children aged between 15 and 19 years are out of training, employment, or school (The United Nations Children’s Fund, 2020). In Canada, parents are busy, and they spend more time working since they want to provide better lives for their children. As such, they do not have enough time to spend with their children. Schools are the ones that shape young people’s lives since they are the places where children relate to others under their teachers’ watch. Moreover, the transition from school to work is ineffective, particularly for young people that are left on their own without enough support from their parents.
Answer 3
Some countries that are consistently doing well on numerous indicators include the United Kingdom (UK), Canada, Netherlands, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, and the United States of America (USA). These countries have a high percentage of young people with high life satisfaction at 15 years (The United Nations Children’s Fund, 2020). When it comes to education, the majority of ch...
