Even though, the twins live similar lifestyles, there is a likelihood that the younger twin has had precipitating events that may have led to the lung disease. The medical history of the twins would appear similar, but it is also likely that past medical tests did not reveal the risk of lung disease. In studying epidemiology, the interplay between cause and effect, the environment, genetic makeup and agent of a disease all affect disease prevalence (Pass et al., 2012). A disease may be predominant because of genetic predisposition or the environment. Since the twins share similar genetic makeup, it is most likely that the younger twin has the lung disease because of the environment. At the same time, there could be differences in the genes associated with innate immunity, and this form of immunity influences response of adaptive immunity (Kimman, 2002).
Diseases that are predominantly common because of the environment vary among populations with similar genetic make up, while those predominantly genetic are clustered in families.
