Analysis of the trends involved in personal health informatics and Electronic Health Records (EHR) highlights an overlap in using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance patient preferences. The shift from paper-based to electronic records has diverse applications; however, there is concern over privacy and confidentiality risks. Policy reforms are warranted as a resource to limit the exploitation of patient data for commercial interests.
A shift from paper-based to digital records across EHR systems and personal healthcare records improves the monitoring of patient conditions; however, there are security and confidentiality concerns. EHR includes digital versions of patient data developed to enhance efficiency in managing treatment plans. The digital resources enable cross-functional teams to access and document patient diagnoses, treatment, and medication changes. While EHR and personal health informatics facilitate real-time patient information, healthcare professionals and patients have to account for legal and ethical aspects (Keshta & Odeh, 2020). For instance, physicians, nurses, and laboratory attendants have access to tests and are responsible for applying caution in utilizing electronic devices. Furthermore, organizational leaders must select competent encryption software vendors to prevent data breaches. While patients assume the main responsibility for protecting personal health data, they experience similar risks in cyber breaches. Health information technology improves access to treatment-related data, but patients and health specialists share similar concerns over confidentiality and security.
