Transformational Leadership
Leadership involves the ability to guide or lead others into performing better. Performing better is determined by decisions made which also have an impact on both individuals and the society. Accordingly, the leadership strategy which brings about change in individuals and social systems is referred to as transformational leadership. In order for transformational leadership to be effective, it has to conform to certain principals. These tenets of transformational leadership include; simplification, innovation, preparation, motivation, determination, mobilization, and facilitation.
Under the simplification principle, the transformational leader is tasked with making the entire process easily understood and eliminating misunderstandings. This can be achieved by clearly communicating where the team is headed and what needs to be done so as to achieve it. As long as the anticipated results are practical, the team would work in the desired part to effectively relay the vision of their leader. Moreover, such a team needs to be motivated. This brings about the motivational principle which requires transformational leaders to understand what their followers like and what they do not like (Eisenbeiss, et al. 2008). In turn, the leaders will be able to offer the team members what they like. For instance; by establishing a conducive work environment, recognizing accomplishments and offering extra training, the leaders will be able to attract better performance from employees. The end result would be a commitment of team members to the leader’s vision.
The principle of determination requires a transformational leader to have courage, strength, and endurance while pursuing their vision. The leader should not despair even if they are faced with tough challenges in the process. In turn, this would influence the team members or employees to realize that not giving up pays off. Further, in order to achieve the ultimate purpose of transformational leadership, the leaders are required to assemble the right people. By mobilizing the right team who are willing to work hard, a leader is able to get the job done appropriately. However, this requires skilled and competent leaders who are able to appropriately assign tasks to the team based on participants’ abilities. The other principle requires a transformational leader to have the constant ability to keep learning. This is the principle of preparation. It necessitates that the leader should be prepared to learn and transfer the knowledge and skills gained to his or her team. As such, the leader should be willing to nurture and support this relationship in a manner that will allow it to flourish.
Additionally, the tenet of facilitation requires that a transformational leader provides the team members with appropriate learning tools which would be relevant to achieving the set vision. For instance; employees need activities which will broaden their perception of things and encourage them to keep learning (Dong, et al. 2017). In this regard, a leader is supposed to fulfill this desire for intelligence by stimulating the employees with the necessary working tools. The final principle is that of innovation. Innovation is necessary given the dynamic nature of working environments. Accordingly, a leader should recognize the need for change and work to implement it. This would also involve educating the team members on the importance of change and how embracing it would be of benefit to all involved stakeholders.
The theory of transformation leadership has evolved over time. Historically, leadership used to be perceived as something straightforward (Bass, 1999). However, it is recen...
