Humans’ effort to develop theories is formalized in sciences and art as scholars or researchers seek to predict and understand people’s behaviors. Theories are systems of ideas that explain specific phenomena or how certain things happen. They are developed and adopted if they demonstrate value in predicting or explaining things. Theories usually coalesce in the human mind and are developed to meet specific needs. Theorists observe things and relate them with researches to predict human behavior or other phenomena. They rely on published observations of research literature, which they critique, review, integrate, and decipher by considering their reflections and thoughts. The paper focuses on the science and art of theory development and evaluation.
In nursing, the word theory refers to works with diverse abstraction, specificity, and range. Conceptual models are frameworks through which theories are usually derived. Theories comprise propositions and concepts about a particular phenomenon. A concept is a phrase or word that captures the meaning of something, while a proposition is a statement with one or more concepts (Gray, Grove, & Sutherland, 2018). For example, the concept in the culture care theory is to take care of patients by respecting their cultures. In addition, the proposition is that the theory emphasizes care activities that help, facilitate, enable, and support patients to regain or maintain health. As a result, nursing theories prioritize health condition experiences and health-related events, which provide the context for a particular theory.
The science and art of theory development involves observing things around and human behaviors without forgetting to perform research to support the propositions with facts. When researchers fail to confirm the aspect of a specific theory, they modify its variables and drop things that hinder it from fitting the findings (Redmond, 2015). In that light, the development of theories requires research. For instance, suppose a theory postulates how effective communication between nurses and patients minimizes the recovery period. For a theorist to develop that concept, the individual must do research to see how a proper patient-caregiver relationship is important in the treatment process. If numerous studies show that effective communication decreases the recovery time, the theorist can implement the theory. However, if there are specific conditions that must be met to reduce the recovery time apart from proper patient-caregiver relationships, the person ought to modify the variables of the theories to involve these components that meet the patient’s needs.
The science and art of theory evaluation involves three primary components of theory generation and five steps of theory testing. In particular, the three elements of the conceptual-theoretical-empirical (C-T-E) structure are a theory, conceptual model, and empirical indicators (Neuhauser & Kreps, 2014).
