Introduction
The Triple Aim framework incorporates elements that support population health management objectives. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) addresses the primary healthcare delivery models, including the nurse-managed medical centers, the health or medical home, and the accountable care organization. There have been current trends impacting healthcare delivery models in the recent past. Quality and safety standards impact healthcare delivery models as they play a significant role in reducing medical mistakes. The report addresses the association between the Triple Aim and population health management and delivery models, the current trends in care delivery, and the impact of safety and quality on delivery models within healthcare.
The Triple Aim, Population Health Management, and Delivery Models
In 2008, the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) designed the Triple Aim model inclined to “improve individuals’ care experiences, enhance populations’ health, and lower the per capital cost of care for populations” (Al-Jasser & Almoajel, 2020). Since its introduction, the Triple Aim definition has remained consistent. The Triple Aim relates to population health management (PHM) as it is tailored to enhance equity of care and achieve health outcomes improvements. More importantly, PHM embraces the quadruple aims of health care: improvements in population health, care experiences, workforce health and wellbeing, and reduction in overall health care costs. In this way, the PHM model includes the triple aims of health care. The Triple Aim framework is a patient-centric approach that optimizes the mental and physical health of populaces over individual life spans as well as across generations. It also requires that healthcare professionals address existing chronic and acute conditions and scale up the emphasis beyond treatment and care for patients with known medical issues to holistically recognize all people within their patient population who could have potential problems (Siegel, Taylor, & Pettinicchio, 2019). Further, the Triple Aim relates to PHM as it requires a proactive approach to ensure healthy patients remain healthy, including continuously monitoring the condition of the at-risk patients.
The Triple Aim is a new healthcare delivery model that both payers and providers increasingly promote as it holds promise in mitigating health disparities. It promotes simultaneous improvements in population health and patient experiences and lowers costs per capita, including considerable feasibility in reducing health care disparities. The Triple Aim reformed healthcare delivery by introducing structures that facilitate healthcare access improvements and enhance cost-effectiveness and high-quality thresholds while mitigating health discrepancies from the population health dimension. For example, the Triple Aim relates to the ACA, which promotes quality improvements and quality of care, patient-provider interactions during delivery, and the provision of more patient-centered care (Wasserman et al., 2019). In this way, the Triple Aim relates to approaches to healthcare provision since its dimensions supported the introduction of new models of healthcare delivery to enhance health care access and quality improvements.
Current Trends in Health Care Delivery Models
Transparency and consumerism in healthcare have been trending for the previous few years but will potentially continue influencing healthcare delivery in 2022. The burgeoning costs for users show no manifestations of slowing down. Healthcare consumers increasingly recognize the need to be more collaborative to ensure they derive optimal values for their hard-earned money spent to obtain healthcare. Consumers are proactively demanding autonomy and transparency in their care experiences. In this context, healthcare organizations’ success will be anchored on meeting clients’ expectations and needs. Providers will be prompted to manger the healthcare supply chain to provide users with the best access, cost-efficient, and quality choices. Some of the marketplace dynamics driving heightened interest in transparency and consumerism at federal and state levels include increased out-of-pocket (OOP) costs and downside risk arrangements.
