Patient compliance refers to patients’ adherence to specific prescribed treatment or diet and whether a patient avails himself for re-examination or follows up. Also, the extent to which the patients’ real behavior coincides with the medical instructions provided might be complete, partial, nil, or over-compliance. Diagnosis and prescription of evidence-based medicine is a satisfying experience for doctors; they assume their patients will accurately follow their instructions (Brown, 2019). Patient compliance is important in medicine since it promotes treatment effectiveness. Therapeutic objectives cannot be achieved without compliance leading to poorer patient results.
The Role of Healthcare Professionals in Compliance
Healthcare professionals’ compliance role includes providing patients adequate information regarding treatment procedures. Doctors and nurses should provide information to patients to eliminate fear and encourage infection acceptance to increase compliance. They should provide reading materials to patients and multiple reliable websites they can visit for more information in case the patients are internet savvy. Healthcare professionals might contribute to non-compliance by maintaining a poor relationship with patients and failing to motivate patients to take prescribed medicine.
Compliance and Collaboration
As indicated, patient compliance is adhering to treatment or following medication rules. Conversely, collaboration refers to working together and sharing responsibilities to promote effective problem solving and decision-making for better patient results (O’Daniel & Rosenstein, n.d.).
