Setting
The setting of my facility is the Emergency Department (ED) in New Orleans (NOLA). It is a medical treatment facility specializing in emergency medicine and care. The primary function of the NOLA emergency department is to provide medical and surgical care to patients arriving at the hospital in need of urgent care. Emergency department personnel may also respond to certain conditions such as cardiac arrests within the facility. The department aims to provide quality pre-hospital emergency care to citizens of New Orleans (nola.gov). As public servants, the Emergency department provides time-sensitive, compassionate, respectful and medically-sound delivery of this pre-hospital health care. The department also values trust. Although it is impossible to predict the occurrence of an accident, the emergency department in New Orleans has created an environment where patients can trust the emergency experts who are prepared to take care of them.
The doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals in the department have dedicated their lives to save those of the patients. They work full time to care for patients with immediate emergency conditions. In particular, the emergency department in New Orleans is open for individuals suffering from the following conditions:- chest pain, spinal injuries, severe head injuries, broken bones, heavy bleeding, pregnancy problems, abdominal pain, large burns, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, a sudden change in vision, loss of consciousness, knife or gunshot wounds, large open wounds, coughing or vomiting blood and any life-threatening condition (umno.org).
Chosen Population
The chosen population for emergency care in New Orleans is patients with addiction and hypertension problems. The new data from state health officials have shown that hypertension is the most common pre-existing condition among residents in New Orleans (Umholtz, 2020). With the current COVID-19 pandemic, it has been reported that most people in New Orleans who have succumbed to COVID-19 had underlying conditions such as hypertension. According to the report, hypertension is the most common underlying condition in New Orleans (Umholtz, 2020)). The emergency department provides urgent care for these individuals, especially during the COVID-19 epidemic because they are at higher risk of dying of the virus.
Patients with symptoms of heart attack, stroke warning signs, and cardiac arrest warning signs are advised to call 911 for immediate medical attention (umno.org). Symptoms of a heart attack include chest pain; pain in other body areas like arms, back, jaw and stomach and shortness of breath. Stroke warning signs are face drooping, arm weakness, and speech difficulty. Cardiac arrest warning signs include sudden loss of responsiveness and abnormal breathing. These signs are associated with hypertension, and any person around New Orleans experiencing such symptoms is advised to call 911 for emergency response (nola.gov).
