The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is responsible for facilitating research and detection of diseases. The organization has an elaborate program to ensure that quality research about diseases is conducted to enhance universal health coverage. Most countries with mosquito-borne diseases largely depend on support from CDC to prevent and treat the diseases. The institution helps in the management of epidemics in various nations. CDC usually has a budget to help combat mosquito-borne diseases in the affected countries. The plans of cutting the CDC surveillance budget will put many countries depending on the program at risk (Vazquez-Prokopec et al., 2010). Many people in those countries affected by malaria diseases will be exposed to other diseases, making them vulnerable.
Slashing surveillance and research budgets will equally increase epidemic management costs for the affected nations. The move will significantly devastate people's health in those countries, exposing them to other related diseases. The costs of preparedness of malaria-affected countries will increase if the proposal to cut the research and surveillance budgets is implemented (Azil, 2019). The proposal will adversely affect countries affected by mosquito-borne diseases, leading to a health crisis in those countries. Cutting surveillance costs delays control responses, thus increasing health costs and infection cases. The U.S government should review the proposal to cut the budget and make emphasis on establishing sustainable systems for enhancing research and surveillance.
Saving the Money for the Long-term
Cutting surveillance costs does not save move for the long-term. The action translates to an increase in costs for the prevention and controlling of an outbreak. No savings are made by cutting the budget because the proposal will lead to a delayed reaction to control diseases, which in the long run will escalate the total costs by a more significant margin. A robust surveillance system enhances response to diseases, thus reducing the total costs of managing the epidemics. Cutting costs will make the CDC shift its role from providing preventive services to offering reactive services because of the delays in detection and disease response (Vazquez-Prokopec et al., 2010). To save money, the government and CDC should invest more in surveillance and research systems. Enhancing the surveillance system translates to low preparedness costs rather than responding to epidemics (Azil, 2019). Lawmakers should focus on improving and enhancing research and surveillance strategies to minimize epidemic management costs.
