ANA code of ethics helps offers guidelines on how nurses should carry out their duties in a way consistent with the expectations in offering nursing care and ethical obligations. The code of ethics contains several provisions grouped into three categories; nurses’ ethical responsibilities to their patients, nurse’s obligation to themselves and ethical requirements in relation to the society and the world at large. The paper discusses provision one, which requires nurses to be considerate with patients and treat every individual with dignity.
How Is Ethical Behavior an Integral Part of Being a Nurse Leader?
Character is defined by qualities that make a person an effective servant leader in regards to ethical decisions. Ethical behavior is demonstrated with respect for moral principles such as respect and dignity. Leadership begins with a character; an individual must exercise vulnerability, legitimacy and, love for other people to lead them. Nurse leaders showcase various principles associated with the ethicality in leadership. A servant leader’s first concern is not with self-interest, but putting other people’s interest first. A nurse observes respect and compassion for the integral worth, self-respect and unique attributes of every individual. In a professional set up, nurses consider the needs and respect the values of every individual (American Nurses Association, 2015). Nurses provide services according to the needs of the patients without any biases or preconception.
