This week's literature reminds me of the complex relations between food and memory and food and identity. Claire Bunschoten's article, “Eau de Cookie Dough”: Gourmand Fragrances, Negotiating Nostalgia, and Inedible Food Cultures”, explores how the olfactory experiences of artificial foods, such as cookie dough or vanilla, may evoke a nostalgic longing without the required ingestion of the food. According to Bunschoten, these scents offer a pheromonal link to remembrance and identity, turning the food from a physical demerit into a culture and feel.
