Andrea Montanari, in "The Stinky King," investigates Western colonizers' perspectives on the durian fruit, highlighting both attraction and disgust in the article “The Durian and the Civilizing Process: Western Attitudes toward the Durian in Colonial Southeast Asia.” Montanari mentions that the durian was transformed into a cultural center, allowing Europeans to contrast their perceived superior culture with the supposedly inferior Southeast Asian culture (Montanari, 2017).
