Andrea Montanari, in "The Stinky King," investigates Western colonizers' perspectives on the durian fruit, highlighting both attraction and disgust in the article βThe Durian and the Civilizing Process: Western Attitudes toward the Durian in Colonial Southeast Asia.β Montanari mentions that the durian was transformed into a cultural center, allowing Europeans to contrast their perceived superior culture with the supposedly inferior Southeast Asian culture (Montanari, 2017). This is particularly true because Western reports noted a potent odor magnified to establish the durian as a symbol of European colonial superiority.
