Research Critique, Part 1

Essay Instructions:

Prepare a critical analysis of a qualitative study focusing on the problem statement, study purpose, research question, literature review, and theoretical framework. The completed analysis should be 750-1,000 words. Refer Research Critique, Part 1. Questions under each heading should be addressed as a narrative, in the structure of a formal paper. Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required. Research Critique, Part 1 To write a critical appraisal that demonstrates comprehension of the research study conducted, respond to each of the questions listed under the headings below. Do not answer the questions with a yes or no; rather, provide a rationale or include examples or content from the study to address the questions. CRITICAL APPRAISAL GUIDELINES: QUALITATIVE STUDY Problem Statement • Identify the clinical problem and research problem that led to the study. What was not known about the clinical problem that, if understood, could be used to improve health care delivery or patient outcomes? This gap in knowledge is the research problem. • How did the author establish the significance of the study? In other words, why should the reader care about this study? Look for statements about human suffering, costs of treatment, or the number of people affected by the clinical problem. Purpose and Research Questions • Identify the purpose of the study. An author may clearly state the purpose of the study or may describe the purpose as the study goals, objectives, or aims. • List research questions that the study was designed to answer. If the author does not explicitly provide the questions, attempt to infer the questions from the answers. • Were the purpose and research questions related to the problem? • Were qualitative methods appropriate to answer the research questions? Literature Review • Did the author cite quantitative and qualitative studies relevant to the focus of the study? What other types of literature did the author include? • Are the references current? For qualitative studies, the author may have included studies older than the 5-year limit typically used for quantitative studies. Findings of older qualitative studies may be relevant to a qualitative study. • Did the author evaluate or indicate the weaknesses of the available studies? • Did the literature review include adequate information to build a logical argument? Conceptual / Theoretical Framework • Did the author identify a specific perspective from which the study was developed? If so, what was it? • When a researcher uses the grounded theory method of qualitative inquiry, the researcher may develop a framework or diagram as part of the findings of the study. Was a framework developed from the study findings? Reference Burns, N., & Grove, S. (2011). Understanding Nursing Research (5th ed.). Elsevier. ISBN-13: 9781437707502

Problem Statement
Bangladesh is known for its prevalence of illness especially among the older people and the health care services from the government offer inadequate support. However, the information on health and illness of the older people as a health promotion function is scant. A study on health services in required to assure that the aging part of the society indeed benefits from current advances in clinical, biomedical and social and behavioral science research in relation to a aging related issues. This paper is going to focus on efforts on interventions that are cost effective which will enhance health related and functional quality of life (HRQOL) as well as prevent functional decline. In this context, the study will focus on the knowledge gap which influences the health care services ability to improve HRQOL and functioning which include financing, costs, organization, barriers to access and delivery of clinical practice and care as well as the interaction of the above mentioned factors with the individual patient preferences and characteristics, community and family (Feasley, 2009).
Improving the care quality for the older people will have a substantial effect on their functional status and thus their quality of life. The effective interventions underuse, the interventions overuse believed to be effective and the misuse of each other have been documented in the elderly. The study is out to determine how the health care system can in the most cost-effective ways prevent stability, reduce the functional decline and extend the active life expectancy among the old people so as to provide decision makers with the required information in accelerating the decline in disability age specific rates and allocate the limited resources efficiently. Qualitative measures are thus required to assess the effectiveness of the interventions meant to improve care given to the older patients (Burns and Grove, 2011).
Purpose and Research Questions
The aim of the study is to examine the health promotion intervention impact on the health of old people, to examine the associates between joint and bone diseases and health related quality of life and to examine the relationship between quality of life and social capital of the older people.
To assess if health education interventions reduce arthritis-related illness prevalence as well as related healthcare expenditure.
To determine the relationship between doctor-diagnosed and self reported joint and bone diseases and HRQOL.
To determine the effect of health education intervention on overall HRQOL
To find out the determinants of quality of life among the elderly and relationship between community and individual level social capital and life quality among the old.
Research Questions
Do health promotion interventions impact the health of the old people?
What the relationship is between bone and health diseases and the quality of life amo...
