It is meant to determine the effectiveness of nursing interventions in preventing dry eye in patients in critical condition. The interventions are meant to reduce the discomfort, visual disturbances, and tear film instability that almost 53% of adult patients admitted in the Intensive care units suffer from.

The research is registered in ClinicalTrials.gov (Identifier: NCT02767258) and in and in the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry (ReBec) (Identifier: RBR5r8syp). It is also ethically approved by the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais review board. Regarding the participants, informed consent was obtained from each patient’s family members and next of kin. The research was a randomized controlled trial with 2 parallel groups. The participants were separately exposed to two nursing interventions: liquid artificial tears and artificial tears gel. The research population consisted of 140 medical or surgical patients that had been admitted to the intensive care unit for longer than 48 hours. They also had to be above the age of 18, had no diagnosis of a dry eye upon ICU admission, a blink rate of fewer than 5 times per minute, and a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 7 or lower. The initial sample was 546 patients but 406 were excluded because they failed to meet the required criterion. The quota sampling meant that each group ended up with 70 patients for the final research.
