The quantitative article selected is titled “testing the reliability and efficiency of the pilot Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) for systematic mixed studies review” and was authored by Pace, Macaulay, Salsberg, Jagosh, and Seller (2012). The qualitative article, titled “the use of focused ethnography in nursing research,” was authored by Cruz and Higginbottom (2013).
The study by Pace, Macaulay, Salsberg, Jagosh, and Seller (2012) is considered quantitative because the problem is quantified such that numerical data is generated. As informed by Hartas (2010) data in quantitative research is presented in a numerical form that is suitable for analysis mathematically. In the article by Pace, Macaulay, Salsberg, Jagosh, and Seller (2012), the appraisal time of independent reviewers on 32 Participatory Research (PR) evaluation studies was measured. As informed in the article, efficiency was accessed by measuring the appraisal of each study. The results show that it took 14 minutes on average for the reviewers to appraise a study. Therefore, it is conclusive that the study by the authors is quantitative. On the other hand, the study by Cruz and Higginbottom (2013) is qualitative research because there are no statistical analyses involved. The article is text-based and intends to inform the audience about the significance of focused ethnography in nursing research. The authors summarize research studies that used focused ethnography. Also, the authors employ information from other sources to show the strength of focused ethnography in nursing research. With no “methods” and “results” sections, it is deducible that the article is qualitative unlike the study by Pace, Macaulay, Salsberg, Jagosh, and Seller (2012).
