Introduction
Registered nurses (RN) remain the single largest group of healthcare professionals in the USA and across the world. Nurses play a vital role in healthcare, ranging from administering medicine to patient care to nutrition and hygiene to monitoring and aiding in treatment decisions. But despite their vital role shortage of nurses remains a vital problem today. The vacancy rate for nurses remains at 7.2%, with the shortage expected to last until 2030. The shortage of nurses is attributed to many factors, including increasing demand for healthcare, aging baby boomer generation retiring, high nursing turnover, and recruitment challenges. The shortage of nurses in today’s healthcare facilities has a huge impact on patient care (Haddad et al., 2020). The overall shortage of nurses leads to high patient mortality, increased medical errors, overcrowding in hospital emergency departments, and a high turnout ratio among actively employed nurses. Proposed Interventions and Rationale
The shortage of nurses can be addressed using the following proposed interventions. First, encouraging more education opportunities for nursing courses to increase enrolment into the healthcare profession and reduce the shortage of nurses in the long term. Secondly, increasing nurse leadership to create more opportunities for nurses through mentoring and education, which attracts new nurses. Thirdly, there is a need for nursing advocacy intervention to lobby for laws that reduce shortages and address the vital needs of nurses (Haddad et al., 2020). Fourthly, there is a need to call for nurse self-care and support to reduce nurse burnout and reduce the number of nurses that quit due to work pressure. Finally, make the nursing profession a lucrative profession to encourage new entrants and motivate existing nurses.
