Overview
The DNP scholarly project represents the synthesis of and proficiency in an advanced specialty in nursing practice. The completion of this project is a requirement for graduation. In this project, emphasis is placed on the implementation of clinical innovation, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, or policy analysis that will improve patient care. A scholarly project is not intended to develop a new theory but rather demonstrate the translation of research into practice.
All DNP projects should:
1. Focus on a change that impacts healthcare outcomes either through direct or indirect care.
2. Have a systems (micro-, meso-, or macro-level) or population/aggregate focus.
3. Demonstrate implementation in the appropriate arena or area of practice.
4. Include a plan for sustainability (e.g., financial, systems or political realities, not only theoretical abstractions).
5. Include an evaluation of processes and/or outcomes (formative or summative). DNP projects should be designed so that processes and/or outcomes will be evaluated to guide practice and policy. Clinical significance is as important in guiding practice as statistical significance is in evaluating research.
6. Provide a foundation for future practice scholarship.
To be successful in the DNP program, you must first become familiar with the project process. You will look at your practice and consider a clinical problem of interest for your DNP scholarly project.
All DNP projects are based on evidence provided in the literature. After you have discerned an idea or area of interest, it is imperative to do a literature search to discover whether clear and enough evidence exists on your topic. Week 1 is the best time to make these assessments, you would not want to invest time and energy into a project that is not undergirded by current literature.
Before Selecting a Question
• Use nursing or medical research literature published within the last five to seven years. Occasionally, older research articles are acceptable for seminal work on a topic.
• Consider your level of knowledge on research design, method, and evaluation.
• Obtain approval from your chair.
Directions
Create a clinical question that is researchable and grammatically correct, written in your own words. Do a library search on your problem of interest and evidence-based intervention. Find and read at least four primary research articles that deal specifically with your problem of interest. Save these articles as Adobe PDFs.
The clearer your clinical question, the easier it is to find the best pertinent articles and to write a good review of literature.
• Write a two-page paper with a brief introduction and/or background introducing your clinical question. (Your reference and title pages are not counted).
• Write in a narrative format with headings and paragraphs, and without bullets.
• Cite three to four primary research articles.
• End with a paragraph of your own thoughts about how your problem of interest is linked to nursing practice and patient outcomes.
• Include references and citations, as appropriate, in APA format.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) represent a significant public health challenge in acute-care hospitals. These infections (CAUTIs) constitute a public health problem in acute-care hospitals and cause added patient suffering and increased rate of morbidity, longer hospitalization, and enhanced cost of care. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies CAUTIs as a key healthcare-associated infection, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based interventions to reduce their incidence. Unfortunately, there is still significant variation in CAUTI prevention strategies across hospitals, even after the guidelines have been developed. There are approaches used to lower CAUTI rates, such as nurse-initiated protocols, infection control interventions, and interprofessional collaboration and teamwork, however, significant gaps still emerge. Therefore, this essay identifies the strategies used in acute-care settings to prevent CAUTIs, their effectiveness on patients, and how they can be improved.

In adult patients in acute-care hospitals, how effective are nurse-driven catheter removal protocols, compared to standard care, in reducing the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections within three months?

Nurse-Driven Protocols for Catheter Removal
The findings of current studies provide evidence of nurse-driven catheter removal protocol as an effective intervention in practice to decrease CAUTI occurrence. Patel et al. (2023) identified various prevention measures for CAUTI and realized that using a nurse-driven protocol to remove catheters reduced catheter days. This study stressed that if the nurses, who are already in touch with the patients, were given the authority to evaluate whether a patient requires a catheter and remove it if not needed, the hospitals might experience a significant change for the better. Self-organization and self-governance enable real-time action within a sphere that impacts infections.
Yeruva et al. (2023) conducted a study evaluating CAUTI prevention efforts in various healthcare settings.
