The medical condition presents with blood clot formation inside the deep veins, specifically at the lower extremities (Hacking et al., 2006). Postoperative patients are more predisposed and susceptible to this medical condition because of low immunity, blood flow alteration, and hypercoagulability due to the Surgery. Untreated or improperly handled Deep Vein Thrombosis increases the chances of complications, more so the pulmonary embolism that threatens the patient’s health and overall well-being. According to statistics from research, approximately 16-38% of general surgery patients suffer from Deep Vein Thrombosis, while around 60% of orthopedic patients suffer from the medical condition (Hacking et al., 2006). Factors/Barriers that Contribute to the Patient Care Issue Several factors contribute to patient care issues. One of the factors is limited mobility, especially immediately after the Surgery. Lack of movement restricts blood flow and increases the chances of forming blood clots. The other issue is surgical trauma and hypercoagulability imposed on the blood vessels that activate the coagulation cascade. Incomprehensive prevention of opportunistic infections among surgical patients is also a contributing factor. Opportunistic infection immensely reduces the patient’s immunity, making them prone to medical conditions. Lastly, there is limited health education for patients regarding identifying signs and symptoms of the condition as a prevention strategy. Potential Ethical and Political Factors that may contribute to the Problem Affecting Patient Care Some ethical and political factors exacerbating the issue include the inequitable distribution of resources that culminates in inadequacies of prevention among the patients. The inequality in resource allocation is both a political and ethical issue. Another moral issue is the research regulations that prohibit the use of patient data in risk assessment, which hampers the making of informed decisions.
