Central venous catheters (CVCs) give access to the large vessels of the neck or any part proximal to the heart. They are vital as they provide access to the venous access for activities such as blood sampling and infusion of medication for the hospitalized and critically ill patients. However, they (CVCs) are a lead cause of healthcare related bloodstream infections sometimes causing life threatening diseases. Infections related to this are usually categorized as “central-line associated bloodstream infection” (CLABSI). Prevention of these infections is thus an important step towards healthcare (The Joint Commission (n.d.).
The theory of planned behavior for instance is a theory that would be implemented to help in reducing the number of cases of CLABSIs. This theory deals with the people’s perceived control over the opportunities, resources and skills needed to perform a behavior affect behavioral intentions.
