Background - Case #1 A young girl with difficulties in school
A 47 old mother and 49 year old father brought their child to the office, an 8-year-old Caucasian female named Katie. The child has received Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications, but the parents express concern that they are ineffective. The teacher provided Conners’ Teacher Rating Scale to evaluate hr behavioral problems associated with ADHD and Katie was inattentive, distracted, and forgetful, she has also made numerous mistakes in schoolwork and performed poorly on reading, spelling and arithmetic. The diagnosis was ADHD with Katie having poor attention and concentration.
Decision #1: Differential Diagnosis

ADHD affects the part of the brain known as prefrontal cortex, where mental functions like concentration are carried out, as well as the impulse control and short-term memory or the working memory. " The choices that were left out are “299.00 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), mild and co-occurring; 300.23 Social Anxiety Disorder” and “315.0 Specific Learning Disorder with Impairment in Reading and 315.1 Impairment in Mathematics”. I did not choose these conditions as the main symptom was inattentive presentation, which is for ADHD diagnosis. The most common ADHD symptoms are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Conners Parent and Teacher Rating Scales and the Vanderbilt ADHD Rating Scales are assessment instruments administered to gather information and evaluate for ADHD.
