Review your problem or issue and the study materials to formulate a PICOT (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome and Time) question for your capstone project change proposal. A PICOT question starts with a designated patient population in a particular clinical area and identifies clinical problems or issues that arise from clinical care. The intervention used to address the problem must be a nursing practice intervention. Include a comparison of the nursing intervention to a patient population not currently receiving the nursing intervention, and specify the timeframe needed to implement the change process. Formulate a PICOT question using the PICOT format (provided in the assigned readings) that addresses the clinical nursing problem.

The nursing shortage is a concerning issue in the modern American healthcare system, threatening to trigger diverse adverse outcomes. Foli et al. (2021) note that healthcare departments with a nursing shortage often increase the probability of more prolonged admissions, compromised care, medical errors, and diminished patient satisfaction. Designing a PICOT question can assist the stakeholders in determining the value of increasing nursing staffing and improving outcomes. In this context, the population represents the project’s target patients at risk of compromised health due to the unavailability of nurses. Inpatients in hemodialysis centers require close monitoring by these healthcare providers, making adequate staffing fundamental. The intervention in this context is increasing the number of nurses through diverse evidence-based approaches. Comparison with patients in a similar setting but one that grapples with nursing shortage will be fundamental to illustrate the impacts of the intervention on outcomes. Finally, this project will determine the outcome’s impact by analyzing factors such as length of hospitalization and medical errors after 14 days of implementation. Nursing shortage or understaffing has become problematic due to the diverse consequences associated with the issue in healthcare settings. Bakhamis et al. This issue triggers complex clinical problems like medical errors, delayed care, hospital-related infections, and bedside falls, among other adverse outcomes.
