Introduction
To anyone who is aspiring to become a nurse, it is one thing to become a graduate and it is another thing to get certification to practice nursing especially in the United States. It is true that completing a graduate program in the United States is a major achievement that is worth celebrating, however, but the celebration could be short lived when one thinks of stress of preparing and planning for the certification examination. These examinations are administered by different bodies depending on the type of nursing one is taking. For instance, for those students who are planning to take Family Nurse Practitioner, they must sit for the certification examination that is offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) (MidlevelU., 2016).
This paper explores preparation for the Family Nurse Practitioner certification examination.
Certification Exam
In the United States, there are two nationally recognized organizations that are administering certification examinations for Family Nurse Practitioners include; American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Certification examinations administered by these two recognized organizations would depend on the level of preparation by an individual Nurse Practitioner (MidlevelU, 2016). This examination is normally being conducted to provide a solid foundation for advancing practicing nursing, health care policy and delivery of services, role of a professional, and/ or clinical assessment and management. It is important to note that both of the examinations are sat for at a centralized testing center and are done within a set time limit. These examinations are quite intensified and very extensive. For the examinations that is offered by the American Nursing Credentialing Center has got a total of between 175 and 200 questions being administered with a maximum of four hours. On the other hand, certification examination that is administered by the AANP is made up of a total one hundred questions for a period of three hours maximum. The American Nursing Association (ANA) has explained that the certification program is very important since it is away for ensuring that the Nursing Practitioner has properly mastered the necessary skills that are needed for one to be registered as a Family Nurse Practitioner (Barton Associates.,n.d.a.).
When it comes to the certification plan for a nurse practitioner, one can either choose from either these two organizations which are the ANCC and the AANP depending on an individual’s preference. In most cases, students are always confused when it comes to choosing which examination body one should choose.
