One of the barriers caused by an organizational culture that fails to empower nursing leaders and makes them feel powerless is poor engagement and job satisfaction. When nursing leaders cannot exert control of their units or apply their professional capacities without unnecessary bureaucracy or consent, they become less motivated or engaged in their duties. Poor engagement and job satisfaction often result in lower healthcare quality and patient safety (Gottlieb et al., 2021). A restrictive work environment impedes the ability of nurses to provide safe, quality patient-centered care. It leads to considerably higher patient morbidity and mortality levels.
Another barrier associated with an oppressive healthcare environment concerning nursing leaders is a lack of agency. When nurse leaders feel they have little autonomy over their work, it becomes increasingly challenging to implement organizational change (Saleh et al., 2022). Employee resistance to change is often higher in restrictive work environments. Since autonomy and empowerment are directly related to job satisfaction, an institution that fails to give freedom to its nursing leaders is likely to have resentful employees who are not supportive or committed to change.<...
