Effective leaders are one of the secrets to organizational success. The capacity of one person to be able to lead his team and motivate them to reach a commonly desired goal is one of the things that every nurse leader should learn. In this article, the author would discuss the motivational and organizational climate that he was able to observe while working for a local non-profit clinic in his hometown. This includes the leadership style used by his superiors as well as what makes it useful in that specific situation. Nonetheless, the author believes that a transformational kind of leadership would be best, especially in non-profit organizations where most employees work as a volunteer.
Background of the Analysis
The place of this study is a local non-profit organization that aims to help the elderly in urban poor settings in meeting their medical needs. Since there is limited access to quality and affordable healthcare in several neighborhoods around the area, a small clinic made up of eight rooms that house ten staff (6 are volunteers) were erected in the place. However, since the clinic is a non-profit agency, most of its income comes from the collective help of other organizations that are advocating for the impoverished in the cities of the United States.
Motivation and Leadership
Building motivation and dedication to one’s work is difficult in cases where there is little to no pay and a heavy workload. In the case at hand, these circumstances characterized the work in the clinic. Most of the workers (including the author) were student volunteers who initially volunteered in order to get additional points for their work.
However, what is surprising is that all of the members go very well with one another. They also render a lot of their time to volunteer work and experiences a feeling of fulfillment with their actions. Although there are many reasons for the heightened motivation of the volunteers, it seems that one of the most important is the transformational leadership of their president.
According to Doody and Doody (2012), Transformational leadership is defined as leadership whereby the leader “motivates followers by appealing to higher ideals and moral values, where the leader has a deep set of internal values and ideas.” During his time volunteering for the job, the author realizes that the president’s strong dedication, hard work, and passion for helping others also influences others in doing the same.
