Introduction
As a nursing student, I hope to impact the healthcare system and support community health outcomes positively. To achieve these goals, I must demonstrate higher professional competency and knowledge levels. This paper evaluates my career options in the job market based on my educational level, commitment to pursue professional certifications, and timelines to achieve my professional goals. It also includes a discussion of how my educational attainment supports my competitiveness and role in the future of nursing. In addition, it evaluates the value of advancing education on nursing competencies and knowledge and asserts the need for mandatory lifelong learning.
Options in the Job Market
There exist numerous options in the job market for that a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) can apply and work. In my case, I am a registered nurse (RN) with an MSN. The nursing educator is one job market option for which I can apply and work. The nursing educator role would allow me to teach students about practical patient care approaches, clinical skills, and the ideal teamwork practices necessary to achieving patient safety and optimal care outcomes. In addition, I can also discharge other duties revolving around nursing education and research, including but not limited to instructing hospital research, maintaining clinical expertise and certifications, and designing and appraising nursing program curricula. Public health nurse is another practical job option. I can work as an RN with an MSN. In this capacity, I will play a critical role in educating clients, communities, and families on issues impacting their health and wellness. It would also be an opportunity to create awareness concerning preventive actions that need to be adopted to augment community health and wellness.
My educational attainment also allows me to work as a clinical nurse specialist, providing direct and indirect patient care, providing expertise as a healthcare consultant for other nursing professionals, and improving healthcare delivery systems enhance healthcare accessibility and quality (Flaubert et al., 2021). The clinical nurse specialist is also responsible for using the assessment data, theoretical knowledge, and research to create, implement, and appraise nursing interventions.
Professional Certifications to be Pursued, Rationales for the Educational Attainment, and Timeline for accomplishing these Goals
I plan to advance my professional profile and expertise by pursuing case manager certification and Resident Assessment Coordinator – Certified (RAC-CT) to open the doors to advance from bedside nursing. As an RN-certified case manager, I will be able to work with healthcare organizations to ensure patients access care whenever they need it. This certification will also enable me to coordinate patients’ care and services in partnership with their family members and healthcare professionals to ensure the timely provision of healthcare services to them (Indeed Editorial Team, 2021). RAC-CT nursing certification will equip me with advanced and contemporary nursing experience and knowledge related to patient care planning, clinical assessment, and completion of Minimum Data Setting (MDS). Also, upon completing the RAC-CT certificate, I will be able to understand and generate medical reimbursement via crucial MDS data analysis and navigate healthcare coding dilemmas to enhance quality patient outcomes.
The RN-certified case manager and RAC-CT certifications can be acquired through various academic steps within specific timelines. It is crucial to complete the nursing program and earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree. The second step is registering as a nurse after passing the mandatory National Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The timelines vary from student to student (Indeed Editorial Team, 2021). These milestones would be achieved within a span of five years. Having achieved these milestones, the nurse can apply to work as an RN-certified case manager in any healthcare organization.
