For decades, the US continues to experience a wider gap between the health care demands versus the available health care providers to offer care services. In one of the recent surveys conducted to understand why nursing shortage is a perennial problem in the US, the survey presents various factors that affect the nursing profession. Reports indicate that out of 50,000 nursing school grandaunts only 80,000 grandaunts can practice their profession (Tower et al., 2015). Research studies reveal that nurse graduates are likely to leave their profession within a few years of employment because of the stressful working environment (Tower et al., 2015).
The widening gap between nurse graduates and those practicing their profession is evident because the current nurse shortage stands at 500,000, only 3.8 percent of nurse students enroll for the profession. The other contributory factor includes limited faculty, including nurse educators (Tower et al., 2015). With a huge number of nurses retiring, newly recruited nurses cannot meet the care demands immediately as expected, because of the negative perception associated with the nursing profession (Tower et al., 2015).
