There are different perspectives on how someone can develop as a leader with some saying that a leader is born while others argue that a leader is made. In this paper, I am going to reflect on my role as a nurse leader and the different way that I define myself as a leader. I will rely on the existing knowledge about nursing leadership and the appropriate leadership theories. Preferred Leadership Style As a leader, I strongly believe that your ability as the leader to carry out your activities lies on the people that you are leading. It is important for me as a leader to make sure that my subjects are trusting me as a leader and after I have gained their trust, we can work together with them to move the organization to another level. Building a team is an important process in the healthcare field. As Yoder-Wise (2019) notes, caring for a patient in the healthcare field requires a team of specialists. This team of people will be carrying out different responsibilities to restore the health of the patient. Some people will act as therapists, physicians, social workers and nurse practitioners. They will work hand in hand to treat the patient and failure to co-operate will lead to poor health outcomes. It is due to this reason that I strongly think that for me to succeed as a leader, it will all depend on the people that I am leading. Leadership Theories The appropriate leadership theory that best fits my leadership style is transformational theory. Transformational leadership style refers to a situation where the leader attends to the needs and the motives of the followers in a way that they can easily build trust CITATION Yod19 \l 1033 (Yoder-Wise, 2019). After building trust, the followers feel motivated when carrying out their duties and responsibilities which will lead to increased performance. My ability as a leader will depend on the way I lead my followers. The followers should always feel motivated when carrying out their duties and responsibilities. In my view, the best way of putting into use transformational leadership is by working with the followed. Instead of issuing instructions, you should lead by example. The employees will also self-manage themselves and in my absence, they can still carry out their duties in the best way possible. Decision Making Skills and Problem Solving Decision making often involves assessing different factors in a specific situation. The first thing to do before making any decision is generating the objectives. In this case the objectives are what you want to achieve. After coming up with the objectives, you will be required to generate the different options or paths of achieving these objectives. I will then weight the advantages and disadvantages of each option before arriving at the particular and most appropriate option. The first step in solving any problem is taking your time to understand the problem. Taking my time to understand he different dimensions of the issue at hand will help me to arrive at the appropriate solution to the problem. This is my view on resolving any problem. For instance, if there is an issue regarding the poor patient outcome, the first step is gathering data on the issue. What exactly happened, how did it happen. Reflections on this will help me to arrive at an appropriate solution. Setting Priorities as a Leader Setting priorities in a healthcare setting will require you as the leader to have an appropriate strategic plan. As Gibson, Martin and Singer (2004) notes, setting the priority requires you to carry out an assessment of the available resources.
