Nursing is a field that plays a crucial role in the healthcare of the nation. A healthy country, both mentally and physically, is a happy nation with high productivity. Governments have increased funding in nursing, ensuring proper nursing policies, and adequate nurse training to ensure their public health system is stable. Healthcare systems are more complex, and they keep on changing in various aspects and other levels of service. This requires proactive leadership that can effectively manage the health sector and has the urgency to respond to emerging issues. This discussion focuses on the qualities of various leaders in nursing and how they can act as a beacon to guide BSN nursing students to be better managers and leaders in the future.
The nurse manager is one of the most influential leaders in nursing. Students aspiring to be nurse managers need to learn the skill of multitasking and being fast. These are the most commonly seen behaviors of nurse managers who want to get things moving in his/her office. Maria Powers is a clinical nurse manager at the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium (SFCCC). She has a BSN nursing with seven years of experience. She has displayed great leadership in her field, something that is quite exemplary in the field. There are three types of nurse managers; clinical, nursing case, and geriatric nurse managers. A clinical nurse manager is any qualified professional in any nursing area that is given the responsibility to manage a health unit. Nursing case managers require a one-year training for one to become a certified nursing case manager (Grubaugh & Flynn, 2018). They work closely with the patients, checking treatments, recording results, and getting involved in research of the patients. Geriatric care managers are almost similar to nursing care managers, only that they are specialized in adult patients only. The roles may require a manager accessing homes of patients, doing consultations with families, and making care programs. Also, geriatric managers help in the appointment and supervision of aides to help patients while at home.
A good nurse manager should be a good administrator. Health institutions require an expert in doing interviews, screening, and proper selection of nursing staff. The nurse manager should be good in following records and policies. The manager should also have the ability to give an excellent address to the workers and unions when necessary. The manager should be good at budgeting and planning, as the manger is in charge of the finances, including salary payments and supplies. To add on, the manager should be able to manage the staff effectively. The nursing manager is responsible for all the nurses, nursing aides, and medical clerks. The role requires going through daily assignments, checking available cases, reinforcing transfer protocols, and other essential duties. Finally, the nurse manager has the responsibility to attend meetings representing the rest of the staff and other members in the health unit.
A nurse practitioner has advanced practical skills that are very important in healthcare. Majorly, the nurse practitioners educate the patients on preventive measures for diseases and prescription of treatments. Laura Grimm is a nurse practitioner who is currently working at SFCCC. She is in charge of the other nurse practitioners. Duties and responsibilities of nurse practitioners are general practices for nurse care, but they are divided into specialty roles. Nurse practitioners who are specialized in primary care are called primary care nurse practitioners. They are specialists in general primary care, doing checkups, treatments, preventive care, and other general duties for both adults and children. Pediatric nurse petitioner is specialized practitioners in children care in the pediatric ward. They work closely with the doctor during care.
On the other hand, a geriatric nurse is a specialist in older people and families. After the treatment, they are responsible for designing exercise programs for their respective patients. Oncology nurse practitioners are those nurse practitioners who are specialized in cancer treatment, and they offer advice for their patients on how to undertake medications and other clinical procedures. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are often ranked at the highest level among the rest of the practitioners, with most of them holding a Ph.D. They work closely with the phycologists and psychiatrists, even though they are not allowed to carry out psychological testing. An added advantage of a nurse practitioner is that they can work in various healthcare specialized facilities (Lopatina et al., 2017).
The nursing scientist is one of the most well-paying careers. They research various aspects of healthcare. For example, in treatments, the study of new diseases, and other adequate medical technologies that are essential in improving the healthcare of patients. David Offman is a nurse scientist at Texas Biomedical Research Institute (TBRI). He is a proactive scientist and earns over $100,000 salary. Nursing scientists do research on various emerging issues that enables healthcare management to make proper strategies in handling new challenges. Nurse scientists are essential in the health unit as they provide information on patient's lengths of stay, number of infections, and the patients who have the potential to take care of themselves at home. Nurse scientists can partner with other scientists from other departments to research new challenges such as COVID-19 pandemics, which does not have a cure at the moment. Nurses also take part in research on the behavior of patients on contracting certain diseases and provide quantitative data for interpretation and analysis (Taylor & Barcelona de Mendoza, 2018). Nursing scientists have worked together with other specialists to solve more complex issues in healthcare and general science.
Students perusing nursing can also be nursing educators. This is a profession in which the nurse educators train and mentor nurses for the future generation. They are role models for nursing students taking them through nursing challenges and what it takes to be a nurse. Nurse lecturers should be able to organize good academic materials for learning.
