I would like to thank you all for coming to this event and you can be assured that you are going to gainfully in knowledge of the nursing market in the near future. I am sure most of us want to stay ahead of the developments now and in the future. In the recent past, the government and the agencies concerned with health care delivery and regulation have been making decisive steps towards revolutionising the health care sector. This is can be traced from the recommendations made in October 2010, as well as, the refinement of the Patient Protection Act, commonly referred to as the Obamacare Act. It is crucial that nurses take conscious steps to ensure that they are future proof.
In the future, the health care facilities and opportunity to offer services are not going to be concentrated in the hospital setting rather there is going to be a lot of diversity. Nurses can take advantage of this decentralisation to secure jobs. One of the sectors that is bound bring on changes is the continuum of care. By the year 2007, throughout all the states there had been more than 461 CoCs which had submitted their applications for federal funding. The CoCs are local or regional planning bodies that are involved in assisting the homeless in the country (Endhomelessness.org, 2014). The programs are spread all of the communities, from the major cities, the rural areas and suburbs. These organisations are tasked with evaluating the services and housing needs. They also provide emergency shelters, transitional housing and supportive services as an alternative to sleeping on the streets (Endhomelessness.org, 2014). At the same time the organisations help with permanent housing projects for individuals and families. As such they form elaborate homeless assistance systems.
Some of the hospitals and network of doctors from across the country have also come together to offer affordable health care services, by sharing the medical responsibilities as well as the financial ones. This is an organisation that is referred to as the Accountable Care Organisation. In the past most of the patient have been getting certain parts of their health care assistance while other needs have been left out (Gold, 2014). With the ACO, the patients can get an all-round health care service at a subsidised price. The patients are assured of quality care while at the same time avoiding bureaucratic tests and unnecessary procedures. Nurses can take advantage of these ventures and develop their career, as this is one of the faces of health care provision in the future (Gold, 2014).
The other face of nursing that nurses need to keep track of and get involved, are the Nurse Managed Health Clinics/Centres (Nncc.us, 2014). These are formed of groups of nurses from different specialisations. These organisations go round helping people in the vulnerable communities, providing nutritional counselling, assessing the current health care situations and establishing needs. While the movement is quite young, it has already proven that it can work and it has been gaining traction (Nncc.us, 2014). Nurses across the country should make sure that they take advantage of such ventures as they grow in their skills and their career.
In the year 1967, the American academy of paediatrics introduced the concept referred to as Medical Home. At the time the primary focus was on offering needy children with specialized care (Hrsa.gov, 2014). Today the medical homes relate to the patient centred care, where the physician, the patient and the family all come together and deliberate on the best way forwards with regard to the patients’ treatment. This is the future of medical care service provision and nurses need to adopt this in their strides as far their career and skills are concerned (Hrsa.gov, 2014).
After the presentations, nurses were given a chance to contribute their views. In response to the developments in the nursing field three nurses gave their comments. One of the nurses felt that the current system needs to change. According to her, health care provision in most of the health care facilities is centred towards the physicians (Gold, 2014). This means that the doctors are the ultimate source of information and the patients together with their families do not have much input. In her view, the patient is the one that is sick and the doctors are the ones with information and ability to treat; this means that the two have to work together and include the family as they are affected directly and indirectly (Thefutureofnursing.org, 2014). With this older system the...
