Nurse Turnover in Home Health
The purpose
The quality initiative is reducing nurse turnover in a home health facility. Over the last six months, the rate of nurse turnover has increased. The facility has been forced to employ new nurses frequently. Sometimes, employing new staff members takes time, hence subjecting the existing nurses to work overload. Additionally, the high turnover has reduced the morale of the existing nurses. They work knowing that they too are likely to leave the organization soon. Further, the healthcare facility has been incurring the costs associated with hiring and training new nurses. The huge costs incurred could be saved if the turnover was low. This quality initiative is meant to address nursing turnover by ensuring that nurses have a conducive environment.
The target population
The target population is nurses. In healthcare, nurses are the primary care providers. Without them, the healthcare facility can't operate. Nurses are very critical in the healthcare sector. Reducing nurse turnover will save the organization's costs. Usually, training a new nurse requires a lot of supervision from the existing staff. The facility must spend more resources to ensure that the new members are at par with the existing staff. A low turnover will save the costs that the organization spends on training the new nurses. Medication errors that result from nurse fatigue cost the healthcare facility a lot of money (Alemu, Belachew & Yimam, 2017). The organization has to spend more resources to treat patients who have been affected by medication errors. An increase in such errors has negative implications on the facility's reputation, hence reducing the number of clients. Secondly, it will boost the morale of the nurses. The implementation of this quality improvement will involve motivating the nurses to boost their morale. Nurses who are demotivated tend to leave for other facilities where they feel that they are valued. With the quality improvement, nurses will stay longer since they feel that the organization values them and their contribution. Thirdly, the ...
