Nurse Managers and nurse leaders both operate with one goal, to ensure that certain healthcare objectives within the nursing field are attained. They aim to achieve this by close collaboration with other stakeholders while providing clear guidelines to the nurses. Simply put, the roles of these two are to be the lights or role models for the rest of the nursing team. Looking at the process of reengineering the healthcare sector, nurse managers and leaders, therefore, have a crucial role to play. They can contribute towards this reengineering process through the establishment of policies and strategies that would improve the quality as well as the output of healthcare in their spheres of influence.
Nurse Managers and leaders already have the power to make things happen in healthcare facilities. Having the power or authority, however, isn’t the only sure way of getting things done. Reengineering healthcare is a holistic process that covers virtually every facet of the field. It isn't just a matter of handing down instructions for tasks to get done (Sherman, 2019). This means that the nursing team needs to have the drive and belief in whatever the strategies put forward by the leaders and managers. This needs nurturing of the concepts within the staff and building new, lasting linkages with others.
As a result, instead of only using the power they possess, these leaders need to apply other facets of their positions, such as motivation, inspiration and even persuasion in their efforts to provide a vision for others. The process of reengineering healthcare needs the establishment of new goals and visions, as well as strategies to achieve the same.
