a. What makes me a good nurse?
One of the reasons why I chose the nursing profession is that I like working with people. I am empathetic and compassionate towards the patients' pain and suffering. However, I understand, nurses are at risk of burnout and compassion fatigue, and I am emotionally stable to care for patients. Now that I already have experience in the field, I appreciated the importance of communication skills, especially speaking and listening. Before my working experience, I had known listening is essential, but now I am a better listener who focuses more on holistic care.
b. Do I realize the complexity of the field of nursing
I have always been keen on attention to detail, and my experience taught me that decision-making and problem-solving are equally important. The nursing profession is complex, and as a nurse, I had to make adjustments in work hours and responsibilities. When I first started working, it was a challenge working even nights and weekends. I appreciate the health practitioners' hard work. Research and use of research findings in practice are some of the priorities for nurses to improve care quality. It has also been expected that I had to acquire knowledge and skills for making complex clinical decisions as part of core competencies as a practicing nurse.
c. How do I value myself and others in the context of nursing?
My experience taught me the need to work as a full partner and work closely with others to provide quality care and transfer patients. At first, I was unsure how workers practice under different shits and still collaborate with others. Then I learned the need also to take the initiative to be a part of teams. Courses emphasize the need to use the best evidence in clinical settings and support decisions, which has been essential to providing high-quality and safe care (Wagner, Dolansky& Englander, 2018). As a nurse, I am the recognized first point of contact for patients, and my interactions can influence their perceptions about the health care system.
d. How do I focus on the patient so they feel heard and important?
I value patient assessment, and this intervention is necessary to offer holistic and individualized patient care. Respecting patient autonomy, confidentiality, and getting informed consent has been crucial to involving patients in health care, and they appreciate that their voices are heard. Good listening skills are essential in supporting this. Nursing practice and experience influence the level of comprehensive care that the patients receive. I have worked closely with experienced nurses,which allowed me to understand how to interact with patients and offer comprehensive health assessments.
e. What experiences have left an indelible mark on my journey to RN BSN?
The nursing profession is up-close and personal, and different experiences have an indelible mark on my RN BSN journey. At one time, I cared for a patient who had breast cancer and required chemotherapy, she went through the whole treatment, but the more experienced nurses with higher qualifications cared for her more. When she completed her treatment, she came to thank me personally, and I felt that I was in the right place. I was more motivated to advance my education for professional development and provide better care to the patients. Having another person show appreciation motivated me to try out my best as I had more belief that I could do more to make a positive change.
