Caffeine is widely utilized as a behaviorally active substance, and the vast majority of the world’s population consumes caffeine either directly or indirectly. Caffeine has ergogenic benefits, and scientifically improves the duration between the exercise time and exhaustion in individuals. However, sports medicine personnel, dietitians and athletic trainers’ support the use of caffeinated drinks due to the diuretic properties, and in some cases, it may lead to the development of hypothermia.
The consumption of caffeinated drinks and fluids has a mild diuretic effect, but do not increase the risk of dehydration in individuals. It does not result in hypothermia or a reduction in heat tolerance during exercises (Zhang et al., 2015). Diuretic products increase the production rate of urine in the body, and thus, large consumptions of any fluid are diuretic. The imbalances caused by frequent urination and the lack of intake of water can result in dehydration. However, the use of caffeine can lead to incontinence in some individuals.
