My Nursing Goals and Beyond
Introduction
I never imagined I would end up as a single mother by escaping domestic violence seven years ago. I moved to the United States with a large family, with 12 siblings, in 2014. Since our father came ahead of us, he had prepared a safer landing in the US, which presented us with seamless opportunities.
My landing at SeaTac airport and the welcome ceremony is quite a memorable experience. The warm welcome at the airport marked a significant transition in my life. The new land was refreshed by aspiration in life. My desire to pursue my nursing career ambitions was not a reality.
Why nursing? My desire to pursue a nursing career is not a notion that comes from nowhere. I had harbored a great interest in nursing. My elder sister could have played a critical role in influencing my professional choice since she was a nurse. My sisters became my crucial role model. How he cared for the patient and her values, principles, and beliefs convinced me that I need to be a nurse. Just like my sister, I wanted to do something in my future career and life that is challenging, interesting, and makes a difference in people's lives daily. The nursing profession was a good deal to me because it presented me with opportunities to demonstrate care and exploit my inner value, beliefs, and principles.
My dream to start nursing can be traced back while I was in my homeland, Ethiopia. I think that is where the idea of becoming a nurse came to my mind and gradually developed. I dream of becoming a nurse to stretch out my arms to help people with any medical condition, especially elders and children, after completing my secondary school education. I tried to join nursing school while I was back home, but major challenges impeded the transition. Thus, my move to the US was a game-changer because it actualized my dreams.
Surprisingly, there encountered challenges as I settled in the US, but they did not diminish by the aspiration to become a nurse. I went to Seattle community college to start my dream, and I registered for a prerequisites class for the first time. I registered for the course, but challenges persisted, including caring for my daughter since I was a single mum. As a single mom with all ups and downs in my life, I managed to finish all prerequisite quarters with the help of Allah at the end of three years of continued commitment and determination. The last breathtaking step involved applying for a nursing school. Luckily, I had managed to get good grades that will enable me to join the nursing school. But the challenge was, all the Seattle colleges, including Highline college admission taken place only through the drawings to accept nursing students. It does not matter even if we had high standing accumulative grades. With such condition, I had applied to the three Seattle colleges and Highline community college. After some months the application, I could not believe my eyes when I first opened my email says "Congratulations." Highline college accepted my application before any colleges that I had applied to. It was the most joyful moment of my life.
The challenges I encountered while striving to join nursing reinvigorate my dream. The impediments were a lot by I overcome all of them. This success was out of sheer hard work, aspirations, and desire to succeed in my nursing career. I understand that nursing is a demanding career. Although it is is physically and emotionally demanding career path, I believe nursing homes with many accolades and rewards. I knew that I would make the world a better place by improving people's welfare through excellent healthcare service delivery. Nursing involves serving, educating, volunteering, and advocating. I knew nursing as a selfless career where one has to assist and devote care to familiar people and strangers. I consider serving as the heart of nursing. Education is not only a mere aspect, but it is an exceptional practice in nursing.
Nursing demands extensive knowledge, experience, expertise, and skills, to deliver healthcare services in a contemporary, complex environment. I know my daily nursing practices would involve educating patients in disease management, expected outcomes and prognosis, and the benefits vs. risks of any given intervention. I would be expected to volunteer in many instances where I need to give back to the community. Finally, what about health advocation. Advocating for better healthcare is one of the many tenets of nursing. Why not participate in advocating for patient's rights and championing transformative policies and game changes in health? I would perform as a liaison between physicians, patients, and nurses, to help the patient make optimal health decisions and behavioral changes.
I love the experience at Highline College. Its nursing program is exciting and stimulates the fundamental principles necessary for the delivery of exemplary care. The learning environment is calm and focus. From narrations regarding the college experience of former students and nursing staff, I felt highly motivated. There is a robust bond between learners and instructors, where student-centered learning practice forms the epicenter of overall learning. Highline College has challenged my perception and equally reinforced my perceptions and attitudes about nursing. It has challenged me on how I can apply theory into actual practice. I now appreciate how it is essential to correlate theory and practice. This observation is reaffirmed by Fotheringham et al. (2015), who argued that the nursing curriculum should demonstrate the association between the essential nature of nursing and practice-based learning outcomes to help the student appreciate contemporary nursing to link nursing theory with practice. Everything, our learning programs, chokes out thinking. My critical thinking has been tested to the limits where instructors deploy problem-based learning to impact cr...
