Introduction
`Welcome to the Friendly El Monte` is a renowned ElMonte’s slogan. This is a residential and industrial booming city in southern California. It is documented with an estimated population of 113,475 in the 2010 census from 115,965 in the year 2000.Currently it is estimated to have approximately 130,000 people. Unfortunately, the Los Angeles County Mental Health Department has noted that some of the El Monte residents deal with depression and alcohol and drug addiction, therefore, ranking the two as the most common mental health problems in the city (The Center for Nonprofit Management:Maura J. Harrington, 2013).
Mental health data
Kaiser Foundation Hospital-Baldwin Park (KFH-BP), a non-profit hospital, conducted a survey together with other non-profit hospitals in California, on the Community Health Need Assessment (CHNA), as it is required by the Patients Protection and Affordable Care Act groups. The data collected showed that the rate of mental health hospitalizations in the city of El Monte and in the KFH-BP hospitals, was made up of 375.4 per 100,000 youths below 18 years and 574.6 per 100,000 adults. Mental health affects the youths, adults, homeless and the uninsured and it is associated with other factors like poverty, low birth rate, high alcohol consumption and unemployment (The Center for Nonprofit Management:Maura J. Harrington, 2013).
Common mental health problem
The city of El Monte has recorded an increase in patients with depression and substance and alcohol addiction problems. Depression is a mood disorder, facing most adolescents in El Monte, whose symptoms are inability to sleep, sleeping too much, having a sense of hopelessness and inability to concentrate. It can lead to suicidal thoughts and negative outlook towards life. The city has recorded that the majority number of people who commit suicide, suffer from depression.
