What are the three mechanisms by which disinfectants work? Describe.
Disinfectants have three essential action mechanisms that help in killing germs. One of the mechanisms is Cross-linking, coagulating, and clumping, where one uses alcohol which causes cell proteins to lose their abilities through clumping. The next mechanism is oxidizing, and one may use chlorine or peroxygen compounds. The third mechanism is structure and function disruption through the use of quaternary ammonium compounds. These are the most commonly used disinfectants (Meade & Garvey, 2018).
