Epidemiology is a basic science of civic health that deals with studying how certain diseases are distributed in a given population and the determinants or factors that influence the distribution of the diseases. The study helps us answer questions such as who is sick, their symptoms, when they got sick, and the risks factors associated with the situation. Risk implies a concept that is quantifiable, such as the risk of developing lung cancer.
The major aim of epidemiological studies is to compare the frequency of a health issue or a disease between two groups. A comparison is made between a group exposed to a specific risk factor and a group not exposed to this risk factor. The outcome is measured in both groups. Depending on the outcomes, one can calculate the risk rate of the outcome for each group.
