The American health care system has encountered numerous problems that require critical address before they spiral out of control. In the future, these challenges are likely to hamper the quality of health care that is offered in health care facilities. In reacting to these challenges, there are various proposed and executed strategies that have been adopted (Chassin, & Loeb, 2013). It is however important to state that due to the nature of these challenges, addressing them in one approach may prove to be tricky. For that reason, this proposal seeks to address some of the important issues that affect and challenge leaders in a health care institution. The proposal will also focus on the effects of these issues on a department and establish how enhancing communication and collaboration would enhance the status of the department.
Issues Faced by the Organization
Some of the most pertinent issues that are currently facing our department are layoffs due to declining revenues and poor job satisfaction leading to high turnover rates. One of the issues that have had a big impact on our department is that of declining revenues layoffs due to declining revenues. While this is regrettable, it has been necessitated by the reduced revenue which has made it hard for the hospital to meet its financial obligations. As a result of this, the management has been forced to reduce on most of the auxiliary staff as a way of cutting down on cost. This has obviously had an effect on our department as the forced layoffs have led to reduced morale among the remaining employees something that has made it quite hard to attain the departmental goals. As a result, this has brought about an unprecedented poor performance among the departmental employees something that has led to patient dissatisfaction. This has created a scenario where the patients at the department have dwindled significantly over the years leading to even reduced revenue in the department and indeed in the entire hospital. Another effect that has been brought about by the forced layoffs is an increase in the workload. Ideally, a large amount of employees means that the workload is distributed evenly among the employees. However, a decrease in the workload means that the remaining staff has more workload, something that leads to burnout and stress. This makes the employees more prone to missing work due to stress-related illnesses and thus increases the cost that is linked to nursing the employees (Hersch, 2014).
