The IOM Report
Introduction
The American healthcare system is quite broad and intricate, consisting of systems and subsystems that sometimes break down into several segments. When these segments are spread out across various regions, it becomes so big and heavy; resulting in the development of inefficiencies. These inefficiencies result in the development of barriers to the effective provision of quality healthcare in its entirety. These barriers usually start from the bottom, where nurses are sometimes at loggerheads with their assigned roles against their academic qualifications and skillset. The IOM report identifies the crucial role that is to be played by these nurses in both the present and the future transformation of healthcare. This is due to their close routine contact with the patients. The report also identifies the efforts by action coalitions to address the challenges facing the healthcare sector through coming up with creative solutions in collaboration with the nurses.
The work of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative
The Institute of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing collaborated on a report to enhance and streamline the healthcare system. This report depicts and visualizes a healthcare system that is simple to use, affordable, provides high-quality care, and encourages wellness (Hassmiller et al., 2020). Interprofessional teamwork and a patient-centered healthcare system are also highlighted in the report. This partnership between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) happened in 2008. In collaboration, the two launched an action plan that would span two years, geared towards finding a way forward in the future of nursing. The ultimate goal was to deliver an action-oriented report on the future of nursing and suitable adjustments to institutional and public policies at both the federal and state levels. The final recommendations brought forward were based on all the facets of healthcare, such as the role played by nurses, nurse education, as well as their retention.
Key messages from the IOM report and their influence
There were a number of recommendations that the two established:
1 Nurses should use their education and training to the fullest degree possible (Hassmiller et al., 2020). Nurses have a lot of promise in terms of pioneering creative approaches to bettering healthcare systems. However, this is only possible if they achieve the required levels of education and competence.
2 Secondly, nurses should be able to get greater levels of education and training as a result of a better education system that encourages effortless academic advancement. To address these issues in the healthcare system, the report suggests that a better education system could aid nurses in providing safe and high-quality patient-centered care.
3 Thirdly, the report describes that nurses should be regarded as main partners with other health professionals when redesigning the health care system (Hassmiller et al., 2020). In order to realize the futuristic healthcare system, strong leadership is required. When making contributions targeted at providing high-quality care, nurse leaders should work as full partners with other experts.
4 Finally, the report suggests efficiency in the planning of the workforce through the passage and implementation of better policies. These are dependent on improved methods of collecting data and advanced infrastructure for storing information...
